Eugene Onegin (Onegin)
Opera Idaho
Boise, ID

Gregory Gerbrandt returns to the beautiful state of Idaho, where he last performed in L'elisir d'amore in 2008.  Along with director, Dmitry Troyanovsky, and Russian speaker & conductor, Sara Jobin, the new regime of Opera Idaho has asked Gerbrandt to portray the title character in Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's best-known classic, Eugene Onegin.  The production will be sung in Russian, with English supertitles projected above the stage.

Eugene Onegin is a well-known example of lyric opera; the libretto very closely follows Alexander Pushkin's original, retaining much of his poetry, to which Tchaikovsky adds music of a dramatic nature. The story concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman's love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend. The opera was first performed in Moscow in 1879.
